The Contrast of Partially Developed Speckles in the Image Plane: Point Scatterer Mode

Abstract

The coherent imaging of a weak diffuser which is composed of Poissonly distributed point scatterers in space has been studied. The dependence of contrast on the number of point scatterers (occupation number fluctuations) is investigated for uniform and Gaussian distributed phase fluctuations. The contrast for a weak diffuser exceeds the contrast for a strong diffuser for very small values of the number of point scatterer image centres within the area of spread function of the optical system.
