Abstract

Paying tribute to the 190th anniversary ofehoropleth mapping, this article aims to summarize the state of the art of a method that, since its beginnings in 1826, has become one of the most popular approaches of thematic cartography. In a typological manner, we will review pros and cons of the standard version compared with alternative choropleth methods. As we shall see, the fundamental characteristics inherent to this technique, i. e. enumeration area improvement and data classification, have been a constant driver of cartographic innovation for almost two centuries.
