Abstract
From the late 1970s onwards, first video gome consoles were developed and released for home entertainment. Gamers were invited to deal with new virtual environments using their own television sets. The new technical means of early game consoles, such as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES, published in 1990), included different graphic and auditory effects used to put emphasis on the spatial dimension of video games. One of these video games which has been sold more than 20 million times worldwide is the well-known SNES-game Super Mario World. As indicated by the title of the game, Super Mario was given his own virtual environment controlled by the gamer. This environment was represented in animated maps. These maps can be seen as early examples of multimedia cartography that were user-friendly and suitable for children. This paper presents the characteristic cartographic structures found in Super Mario World. Moreover, these structures also influenced the development of interactive video game spaces that followed.
