Abstract
Modern interactive atlases are offering manyfold possibilities to visualize, explore and analyze space-oriented information. If a 3D modus is available, not only terrain representations can be applied but also statistical surfaces. Statistical surfaces take advantage of the fact, that the third dimension can be occupied by one or more data variables. Within this situation of 3D multivariate maps one can compare variables, recognize correlations and determine differences in classified data. Statistical surfaces fit well into a 3D atlas because of very similar techniques and usability. The paper presents strategies and techniques for interactive statistical surfaces and discusses examples from the third version of the Atlas of Switzerland.
