Abstract
The paper gives an analytical view of the nature of cartography in the context of modern information and media technologies which have essentially shaped the upsurge of “Web 2.0”. The bandwidth of cartographic products which has been continuously extended with technical evolutions is re-visited in combination with the map typology from the perspective of map use. In relation with the currently prevailing phenomenon “ubiquitous mapping tools and invisible mapmakers”, the author hints at the fact that cartographer is the earliest player involved in geoinformatics and also the only player who must take the broadest responsibility from geodata modelling to usability study to assure the quality of map services.
