Psychiatric Residents as Teachers: A National Survey

Abstract

Results of a national survey of psychiatry residency training directors regarding teaching activities and preparation of residents as instructors is presented. Residents were found to function as educators in all programs which responded in the study and provided instructional services primarily to medical students and other residents. However, data revealed that although a significant number of residencies offer teacher training, a majority of training programs do not provide opportunities for residents to gain expertise in support of these commitments. Specific characteristics of educational skill development programs in residencies are presented. Conclusions and recommendations for the enhancement of faculty development are discussed.
