Abstract
The aim of this study is to improve glaze surface hardness by using a glaze ceramization process. As a first step, the ceramization cycle was determined by studying the evolution of the viscosity as a function of temperature of glaze compositions during firing by means of the hot stage microscope test and the thermal expansion test. With this methods, the nucleating temperature and the crystal growth temperature was obtained. Then ceramization cycles were applied to four glaze compositions and ceramized samples was characterised by XRD analysis and electronic microscopy. A Vickers hardness test was carried out on samples. This study demonstrates that the application of the heat treatment increases the crystalline phases’ rates and improves the mechanical properties of sample.
