Abstract

Issues surrounding the use of major evaluation techniques within medical and psychiatric education are discussed. An assessment was conducted at Walter Reed Army Medical Center of the psychiatry residents’ scores from 1981 to 1983 on the Psychiatry Resident In-Training Examination (PRITE) in order to measure the educational gains among residents during their three training years. The authors hypothesized that gains in knowledge would be reflected in increased mean scores for each successive resident year cohort. However, results suggest that the PRITE may not measure accurately the acquisition of learning by psychiatric residents nor be a reliable test over successive annual sittings.
