Abstract

The development over the past decade of residency training programs in primary care medicine has highlighted issues involving teaching psychiatric and behavioral science skills. The present study was undertaken to determine the extent of psychiatric involvement in primary care medicine residencies. We carried out a structured telephone interview of the directors of the psychiatry/behavioral sciences curriculum of 43 programs. The interview questionnaire consisted of informational items about faculty, financial support, curriculum content, teaching activities and attitudes. The results raise serious issues concerning perceptions and role of psychiatry in internal medicine training.
