Patient-Selection Bias for the Case Conference? An Inquiry into Psychiatric Education Inequity

Abstract

A survey of twenty case conference presentations by psychiatric residents in a teaching hospital showed that the patients selected differed significantly from what would be expected (as determined from the record of 246 inpatients) in being less severely ill and having no histories of previous hospitalizations. There were also a trend to choose white and non-local patients. These findings suggest that such case selection for teaching may lead to inappropriate emphasis in the training of psychiatric residents.
