Conditioned Defensive Burying in Rats as a Function of Preexposure and Strain

Abstract

Amount of time engaged in conditioned defensive burying was measured in hooded and albino rats following 0, 4, or 8 daily, 30-min preexposure sessions to the expenmental chamber with the shock prod absent Shocked subjects engaged in more defensive burying than no-shock subjects and hooded rats engaged in more prod burying than albinos. Additionally, more burying was observed following 4 or 8 chamber preexposure sessions than 0 sessions. Shocked albinos buried most after 4 chamber preexposure sessions and exhibited a decrease in burying following 0 or 8 preexposure sessions. Shocked hooded rats did not display this decrease in defensive burying following 8 chamber preexposure sessions.
