Abstract
With stress being placed upon expanding steel capacity, particularly in many areas lacking capital and coking coal, much attention has been turned toward techniques for the production of sponge iron. Such a material can be used as a substitute for scrap in steelmaking furnaces. This article is a first-hand description of the production and utilization of sponge iron from a new process, the HyL process, in Mexico.
