Abstract

The Ss were asked to select the better of pairs of pictures from the Meier Art Judgment Test under one of three conditions: (a) with feedback correctly indicating a match or lack of match between Ss’ selections and those of artists, (b) with feedback indicating a match or lack of match when the opposite was true, and (c) under no feedback. The incorrect-feedback group showed an increasing tendency across blocks to choose the “inferior” of previously unseen pictures, and in a postexperiment inquiry they indicated doing so through genuine preference. There were no differences between the other two groups. The modification of the preferences of the incorrect-feedback group did not hold up during a follow-up (extinction) phase 1 week later.
