Abstract
Effects of extinction of a well-learned instrumental response were examined in relation to stereotyped rocking behaviors of severely retarded patients. The results indicated that one of the behavioral concomitants of nonreward of an instrumental response is an increase in nonadaptive stereotyped movements among some severely retarded individuals.
