Concurrent Palatability-Induced and Schedule-Induced Polydipsia in Rats

Abstract

2 food-deprived rats earning 45 mg. Noyes pellets in a variable-interval schedule of reinforcement exhibited schedule-induced polydipsia in the experimental chamber with either tap water or a 0.4% (v/w) saccharin solution in tap water. When the saccharin solution was available also to the rats in their home cages, the result was palatability-induced polydipsia. This consumption in the home cage did not affect the volume ingested or the behavior pattern during the experimental sessions in which the animals were exhibiting schedule-induced polydipsia. The average durations of individual drinking bursts, however, did vary according to the solution in the home cage (water, saccharin, or no-solution).
