Abstract

A specially constructed test chamber was employed to study shuttle escape and avoidance conditioning in the Cuban anole (Anolis sagrei). All of the eight animals employed showed significant improvement in the latency and percentage of escape responses, but none displayed avoidance responding above the chance level. Difficulties were encountered when many of the animals abruptly developed convulsive reactions to the shock and had to be withdrawn from the experiment. The onset of these convulsive reactions was found to be a function of the mean shock intensity employed with the animal, and would thus appear to be a cumulative effect of shock.
