Abstract
Rats were trained to bar press on a continuously reinforced avoidance schedule and then shifted to a fixed ratio avoidance schedule. All Ss acquired and maintained the continuously reinforced avoidance response without a decrement over the 17 day pre-ratio period. A fixed ratio avoidance schedule of 4∶1 was also attained by all Ss but only three Ss were able to perform on fixed ratio avoidance as high as 8∶1. Comparisons between the shuttle avoidance and bar press avoidance responses were made and possible variables affecting the size of the ratio discussed.
