Abstract
In attempting to evaluate the probability that at least one member of a multi-man team will detect a signal, one must avoid the assumption that the probabilities of the individual monitors detecting the signal are independent. Such an assumption is probably unjustified, and the use of the multiplicative rule for combining independent probabilities will lead to false conclusions regarding the benefits of increasing the number of monitors on a team.
