Abstract
This article analyses aspects of the relationship between language and biography in autobiographical accounts of personal experience. It is based on a set of narrative interviews conducted in the context of a European funded framework seven cooperative project with the acronym EUROIDENTITIES. With methods of narrative and biography analysis the article shows that the acquisition of a second language can initiate and support biographical transformation in that it may be seen as an inner territory for reflection and biographical work. Within a European context of biographical development, the knowledge and use of a second European language may open up horizons of comparison and can provide access to alternative ways of living. People who successfully integrate their foreign languages within their biographies develop a particular multiperspectivity. They acquire capacities to perform understanding and mediation work and may be proponents in projects of European reconciliation.
