Summary

The management of the sciences is rather unpopular amongst scientists, but it is, as a matter of fact, necessary. It not only concerns the central offices of a college or university, but also every unit, such as a research project or a professorial chair. Besides the administrative work knowledge management is becoming more and more important. It helps to make work more effective and to keep knowledge within the unit when single persons leave their posts.

A recent project at the chair of applied romance linguistics at Saarland University had science management in its focus. Structures of communication, information and knowledge management were the main goals, but besides the project achieved a good team structure amongst the staff members. It developed new perspectives in the field of science management for secretaries at university departments as well as for junior researchers.
