On Compound Nouns in Sarah Kuttner’s Novel Mängelexemplar

Abstract

In this paper, compound nouns in Sarah Kuttner’s novel Mängelexemplar are analyzed. From the 913 types of compounds found in the novel, 115 types of endocentric compounds, which are stylistically interesting and noticeable due to their creative compound structure, are analyzed more closely. The analysis consists of three parts: In the first part, a formal structural analysis is conducted, with the aim of summarizing what possible forms of compounding have been used. This analysis is based on the compounds’ modifiers, which fall into different categories, and for which Fleischer/Barz (2012) have provided a systematic descriptive basis. In the second part of the analysis, a more detailed analysis of the formative structures of the largest group found, i. e. endocentric substantive compounds, is performed, paying attention to the potential complexity of the occasional compounding structures. In the third and final step of the analysis, semantic issues related to the compounding processes are discussed.
