Abstract

This article examines the early work of Bertolt Brecht as a medium for assessing the moral claims of political ideologies from a non-moralizing perspective. In appraising Brecht’s early oeuvre against the backdrop of the pervasive suspicion of ideology and political life that marked Weimar Germany, the essay shows how Brecht refrained from subjecting political practice to unadulterated moral claims. Instead he fruitfully probed its impact within the formal parameters of a montage aesthetics.
