Abstract
Following an introductory description of the Spleen and Stomach functional systems (oo. lienalis et stomachi, pi wei) and the associated yin and yang, the author looks at a variety of factors which can lead to a deficiency of energy in the Spleen yin (depletio yin lienale, piyin xu). Among these are heteropathies (xie), excessive perspiration, the imprudent use of purging as well as warm and hot Chinese herbs, excessive “brooding” (cogitatio, si) and irregelular mealtimes. He identifies the most common symptoms and goes into precise details about the therapy to be recommended in each case. In doing so, he places particular emphasis on the significance of sweet and neutral sapors (flavours, wei) which harmonise the Centre’s Spleen and Stomach functional systems (oo. lienalis et stomachi, pi wei) and which not only supplement but also discharge. He mentions some basic prescriptions and the most important Chinese herbs.
In the second part of the article, the author describes three case studies from his own practice: a female patient who had been suffering from abdominal typhus, a male patient with haemoptysis and a patient with chronic atrophic gastritis. In each of the cases he goes into the illness, the therapeutic principle to be applied and the medicinal prescriptions administered, and he describes the way treatment progressed. He then comments on the three case studies in detail by explaining the pathological mechanisms and the medicinal herbs and prescriptions used in each of the cases. As a result of the treatments, all three patients made a complete recovery.
