Summary
A mineral analysis of nonmetallic matter in steel is based on a knowledge of mineral technology as well as on the microscopic observations of relief, shades of gray, mineral color, crystal shape, and etching characteristics in water. A more positive identification is obtained when the microscopic observations are interpreted on the basis of the minerals that would be expected from the steel composition, the addition made to the steel in the ladle or mold, and the refractories used in the mold or hot top.
