Summary

This paper has described the design of an oxy-gas roof burner in use at No. 3 shop, Inland Steel Co. During the past four years on one furnace, roof burners have proven to be an effective means of decreasing scrap melting time and obtaining an overall reduction in heat time. The burners require little maintenance and have become a regular phase of furnace operation. Based upon this experience, plans are currently underway to equip all of the furnaces in the shop with six burners.
