Summary
It has been shown that alpha and alpha-beta alumina fused cast refractories possess a unique combination of properties which make them suitable for use in several iron and steel applications. Skid rails in reheating furnaces and the lower section of D-H vacuum degasser vessels are the areas where the refractories have been used most extensively to date, but other applications such as the lower stack section of iron blast furnaces are expected to come into prominence.
The dense, nearly impermeable crystalline structure slows penetration of slag, and because of the low silica contents of the fused cast aluminas, relatively refractory hercynite and calcium hexaluminate are formed, rather than low-melting fluid silicates.
