Solidification of eutectic alloys

Summary

In summary, the classification of some structures as discontinuous and/or anomalous seems now to have no validity, because the phases that appear to be discontinuous on a polished section are probably interconnected. There may be merit in using the terms regular and irregular, but it must be remembered that the rate of freezing and other conditions of solidification may influence the regularity of the structure.

It is suggested that there are really only two classes of eutectic structures that can be used without contradiction: first, eutectics in which there are definite orientation relationships between the phases and, second, those eutectics in which there is no fixed relationship.
