Present status and future trends in the production of magnesium

Abstract

The current status of the several successful thermal reduction and electrolytic methods are reviewed. The economies of thermal and electrolytic plants built and operated by the US government during World War II are compared. At that time economics was in favor of the electrolytic processes, and in view of the present preponderance of electrolytic facilities, it can be so assessed today. Changing aspects of raw materials for the electrolytic processes are considered. Magnesium markets in the United States and other countries are surveyed.
