Abstract

The operation of two Graef Rotor furnace steelmaking plants of the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corp. Ltd.,—at Pretoria and Vanderbijlpark, South Africa—is described. The results of over four years of operation are presented and analyzed, with special attention being paid to plant and oxygen blowing modifications, refractory life, and Fe yield. A description of the Tandem furnace steelmaking process and the considerations that have led ISCOR to contemplate this type of furnace, rather than another Rotor or any other type of oxygen steelmaking process, for its expansion at Vanderbijlpark are given.
