Abstract
Techniques for continuously measuring CO and CO2 in the effluent gases of basic oxygen converters and using this data to compute the decarburization rate of the bath are described. Information is given on the use of this technique for controlling high- and low-phosphorus basic oxygen steelmaking operations at two French plants. Utilization of an online digital computer to determine the carbon balance for industrial-scale OLP heats is discussed. Limitations and future possibilities of this technique are considered.
