Abstract
The Jollivet-Peñarroya process for producing lead with bismuth contents as low as 2.5 g per metric ton as practiced at the Noyelles-Godault plant in France is described. The chemical basis of the process—the formation of the ternary compound Bi7Mg6K9 from the bismuth in the crude lead plus the magnesium and potassium additions—is examined. The principal working components of the facility are described, and the economics of the process are briefly reported.
