Abstract

A new and unique method of surface removal of metal in bar, rod, and wire form is described. The reasons for removing the surface of these materials are reviewed. Alternative processing techniques available for surface removal are reviewed and discussed. The new process, which uses the injection of lubricants into the cutting zone under high pressure, is expected to make a significant contribution in cost reduction and quality improvement for products requiring excellent surfaces. A special surface removal operation, as performed on an experimental basis, is described.
