Abstract

Aerospace applications which involve the use of components produced by powder metallurgy techniques are reviewed. In particular, applications of beryllium, tungsten, molybdenum, and tantalum are discussed. The research and development programs being carried out by the US Army, Navy, and Air Force under the auspices of the Department of Defense are reviewed. Four important potential areas of development—discrete particle hardening, pre-alloying, and direct rolling of powders, and consolidation of large billets by powder metallurgy techniques—are discussed in some detail.
