Abstract

Tests to determine the influence of decreasing the slag volume to very low levels upon the performance of a blast furnace are described. Satisfactory operation at a slag volume of about 335 lb per net ton of hot metal was achieved, which is thought to be the lowest slag volume level to have been attempted on a commercial furnace. The changes in production rate, coke rate, and sulfur content of the hot metal and general furnace operation are indicated.
