Abstract
The production of high-carbon ferrochromium from fine Transvaal ores in a commercial Strategic-Udy furnace is described. The power consumption amounted to 3300 kw-hr per net ton and the corresponding consumption of baked carbon electrodes was 27.7 lb per net ton. The energy requirements and the power savings that are achieved using a rotary kiln to pre-treat the furnace charge are reviewed.
