Abstract
Wires of 55 binary and ternary cobalt, iron, nickel, and chromium alloys were twisted and the decay of the free torsion vibration was measured at torsion stresses between 500 and 8,000 psi. Especially high damping was observed on the following alloys: Co-28 pet Fe-7 pet Ni, Co-20 pet Fe, and Co-35 pet Ni. This effect is explained in terms of magneto-mechanical hysteresis, since the damping may be reduced to as low as 1 pet of the normal amount when measured in a magnetic field. High damping binary Co-Ni alloys appear to be suitable base alloys for new steam turbine blade materials.
