Some Transient Effects During Creep And Tensile Tests of an Aluminum Alloy

Abstract

A sudden change from one constant strain rate to another during a tensile test causes an unusual transient in aluminum alloy 61 ST. A sudden change from one constant stress to another during a creep test does not produce an unusual transient in this material. A specially devised test shows that the nature of the previous steady-state conditions, which the sudden change disturbs, is one of the factors affecting the transient behavior. Some of the observations may be explained in terms of strain aging.
