»Übersetzung« und »Nicht-Übersetzung« als Modus kultureller Selbstreferenz

Translation and Non-translation as two Modalities of Cultural Self-reference

Abstract

The author argues that to translate or not to translate in intercultural settings are two possibilities linked up intimately with more general cultural patterns.

The implications ot these two modes of cultural behavior are described and conceptualized. It is shown that translation is compatible with more general German cultural patterns and that the avoiding translation forms part of French communication and interaction patterns.

This analysis is linked to a historical sketch of the formation of German and French language consciousness as a basis for national consciousness and cultural identity.
