Hesses Roman als geschichtliche Utopie verstanden verweist auf einen Utopie-begriff, der zugleich statisch und dynamisch ist: Idee im platonischen Sinn und ewiges Streben danach. Hesses Utopie stellt sich als Synthese und Element dieser Synthese heraus. Bis zum Augenblick, wo die Utopie zur Topie erstarrt und ihre auf Dialektik beruhende Dynamik einbüßt. Hier greift nun das große Individuum ein, befreit die Utopie und erneuert damit ihre geschichtliche Sendung als Antizipation unserer Gegenwart.

Abstract

Hesse’s novel taken as a historical Utopia gives an idea of Utopia which is both static and dynamic at the same time: an idea based on Plato and continous striving for it. Hesse’s Utopia proves to be a synthesis and an element of this synthesis. Up to the point where the ideal world loses its dialectical impact. At this juncture the great individual steps in and liberates Utopia, thus renewing its historical mission as precursor of our present time.
