Abstract

Between 1978 and 1988, the Yorktown Shipwreck Archaeological Project employed a wide range of technological tools during the location, assessment, and excavation of British vessels sunk during the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. The most unique aspect of the project was the utilization of a steel cofferdam and filtration system to offset adverse site conditions and assist the excavation team. The project also made use of remote sensing instruments, computer-aided drafting technology, and a new sonic measurement system.
