Abstract
To act promptly and on demand is becoming an ever more pressing issue for companies. Employees should be available when needed. Our study addresses possible health consequences of this kind of work. Using a problem-centered interview technique (N=20), we explored which aspects of being available for work are responsible for negative health consequences and what strategies exist to cope with the demand of extended availability. Our results show that experiencing uncertainty if one has to work or not, restriction of leisure time activities and, in consequence, impaired recovery are important mechanisms for possible health consequences. Furthermore strategies to cope with extended availability are presented.
