Abstract
Variable working hours are associated with an increased risk of health and social impairments. This study extended previous findings by examining the risk of occupational accidents associated with variable working hours. Logistic regression analyses of an European sample of employed workers (n = 35.187) showed an increase in occupational accident risk for variable hours worked per day (38 %), variable days worked per week (18 %), and variable hours worked per week (31 %), controlling for several potential confounding variables. Additionally, accident risk increased more strongly when worker control over working times was lacking. Working time variability or irregularity, therefore, is a risk factor for occupational safety and health, and should be kept at a minimum, especially for workers without control over their working hours.
