Abstract
This field study compares long term effects of changing a shift schedule for continuous shift work in combination with a reduction of working hours. The alternative five-shift schedule (34.4h per week) introduced by Voestalpine Stahl GmbH is presumed to be healthier than the more conventional four-shift system (38.5h per week; in some cases still in use). Both shift work models have been analyzed with respect to sick leave rate, employee turnover and employee satisfaction over the course of six years (2006–12). The findings indicate that the new, improved shift schedule had a measurable positive effect on health, satisfaction and fluctuation of employees.
