Abstract
Smart personal protective equipment (PPE) aim to reduce hazards by measuring vital- and environmental parameters. These parameters are used to derive the health-status of fire fighters and therefore support decision-making in critical situations. By applying new information technologies, smart PPE is getting more complex and usable design is a big challenge. One of the main problems is the stress-strain reactions and the individual human attributes that make the accurate analysis of the health status difficult. Smart PPE should enable the conclusion of the subjective personal condition based on objective sensory data. The required calculation models have not yet been developed. A new approach is the combination of objective data with the subjective assessment of the situation with the help of machine learning. This paper describes the data collection of a usability study and discusses the results of the machine learning pretest.
