Abstract

This collection of studies on the French colonial site of Old Mobile reflects the intensity with which early 18-century French colonists on the Gulf Coast engaged other Europeans (in Europe and in other North American colonies) and Native Americans (both free and enslaved) in social and economic interactions that eventually led to the creation of a new, regionally differentiated colonial culture. A synthesis of the archaeology of the French presence in North America will have to take into account the diversity of the French colonial experience, one facet of which is explored in this set of essays.
