Abstract

Recent investigations at Old Mobile have included excavation of the first earthfast pieux en terre buildings discovered at this early French colonial site. These small one-room structures may have been barracks for soldiers garrisoned at Fort Louis. Previously excavated structures, interpreted as domestic dwellings, are multi-room buildings of poteaux sur sole (post-on-sill), a more substantial construction method. Differences in floor plan, size, construction method, and associated artifact assemblages reflect differences in structure function and occupation.
