Abstract

The archaeological investigations conducted by the Central Artery/Tunnel project in the area of Boston’s Mill Pond, a natural cove dammed off in the 17th century and filled in the early 19th, found evidence that land was created in the Mill Pond in the 18th as well as the 19th century. Landmaking in the Mill Pond is examined in the light of these archaeological findings and recent historical research, resulting in some new insights about how the Mill Pond was filled.
