Historical archaeology in Yucatan: A preliminary framework

Abstract

There is a growing interest in the historical archaeology of Latin America, a discipline which until recently has received little attention. Given the enormous quantities of source materials and physical remains, as well as the diverse historic and cultural backgrounds of different geographical areas, it is necessary to prepare regional syntheses which will provide a framework for future research. Such a framework is presented for the peninsula of Yucatan, in Mexico. Included are a delineation of the major chronological periods, a classification of archaeological site types and a synthesis of source materials.
