Abstract
The present paper analyses the tradability of the two volatility indices VDAX and VDAXNew of Deutsche Börse AG. At first the calculation scheme of both indices is presented to relate these to traded derivative financial instruments. Afterwards it is neceßary to verify to what extent the VDAX-New of Deutsche Börse AG that was introduced in April 2005 is actually characterized by an improved tradability compared to its predeceßor, the VDAX. This is adduced as a critical motive by the index operator for the introduction of the VDAX-New. It will be shown that there is no clear evidence for an improvement concerning the tradability by the new implementation of the VDAX-New.
