Abstract

Faience, a tin-glazed earthenware, has been recovered at many colonial-period archaeological sites in North America. Intersite analysis towards recognition of ceramic patterning has been impeded by the lack of a standard classificatory typology for faience vessel fragments. Such a classification system is offered in this paper and summary data are presented for the faience assemblages from eight Illinois sites, including French forts and domestic settlements and related Illini villages. Interpretations are offered concerning the availability, utilization, and social role of faience in the Illinois Country during the French colonial period.
